Exercise After Spine Surgery: Safe Recovery Guide

Recoveryprevention

Recovery after spine surgery is a critical period that determines long-term treatment outcomes. The right exercises accelerate healing and restore mobility.

When to start exercising

Light movement is permitted within 24 hours of endoscopic surgery. Start by walking slowly around your room. Active exercises are typically introduced 2-4 weeks post-surgery depending on the procedure type and individual recovery progress.

Safe early-stage exercises

  • Walking on a flat surface for 10-15 minutes, three times a day
  • Breathing exercises while lying on your back
  • Alternating knee bends in a supine position
  • Gentle abdominal bracing without lifting the torso

Gradual progression is the main rule of rehabilitation. Increase intensity by no more than 10% per week. Pain is a signal to stop.

Exercises after 6 weeks

After a follow-up examination, you can progress to strengthening exercises: kneeling planks, wall-assisted partial squats, and pool swimming. Water-based exercises are particularly beneficial as they reduce the load on the spine.

What to avoid

Strictly prohibited: twisting movements, jumping, running, lifting more than 3 kg, and forward bending with straight legs. These movements place excessive pressure on the operated segment and may cause recurrence.

  • Do not lift heavy objects above chest level
  • Avoid sitting for more than 30 consecutive minutes
  • Never exercise through pain

Returning to sports

A full return to athletic activity is possible after 3-6 months. Swimming and walking are permitted earliest. Contact sports and weightlifting require individual clearance from your surgeon.
