What is degenerative disc disease
Intervertebral discs are cartilage pads between the vertebrae that provide mobility and shock absorption. With degeneration, the discs thin out, microtears develop in the fibrous ring, and the nucleus loses volume. This process affects most people over the age of 40, though not all experience pain.
Disc degeneration is a natural part of aging. While it does not always cause pain, significant changes can substantially limit everyday activities and quality of life.
Causes and risk factors
- Age-related changes: loss of disc moisture and elasticity over time
- Genetic predisposition to early cartilage wear
- Excessive spinal loading from heavy lifting or repetitive strain

Symptoms

- Relief when walking or changing position

Diagnosis
A neurosurgeon performs a physical examination, assessing spinal mobility and neurological function. MRI is the primary imaging tool for confirming disc degeneration. X-rays, CT scans, and electromyography may be ordered as needed.
Treatment options
Conservative treatment
The foundation of care includes physical therapy, therapeutic exercises, and medication. Anti-inflammatory drugs, muscle relaxants, and nerve blocks help manage pain. Regular strengthening exercises build core support and slow disease progression.
Surgical treatment
When conservative measures fail over 6 to 12 months, surgery may be considered. Modern endoscopic techniques allow stabilization of the affected segment through minimal incisions, offering faster recovery and less postoperative discomfort.
